The Christadelphians have been meeting in Aberdeen for a very long time. Our ecclesia (church) has minute books dating back to 1844. We own no building and have no ministers. We rent accommodation and share the work between us.
A Dr Thomas, who was instrumental in choosing the name Christadelphians, wrote in 1851, that as a result of his lecture tour in Britain, a church in Aberdeen (has) been brought over to the faith.
In 1909, a Mr Alexander Gammie, as part of his description of The Churches of Aberdeen Historical and Descriptive recorded that the Christadelphians had been meeting in the citys Music Hall for over 44 years. His article, published by the Aberdeen Daily Journal Office concludes with: The Christadelphians may be only a comparatively small body in Aberdeen, but they have earned the respect of the religious community generally by their loyal adherence to their distinctive principles, and by their ability and readiness to give a reason for the faith that is in them.
As a boy in the sixties, I remember attending meetings in the West Room of the Music Hall. The ecclesia had met there for over a hundred and twenty years. We then moved to the Cowdry Club and then then YWCA in Bon Accord Crescent. Today, we meet in the Inchgarth Community centre.
At present we are few in number, but maintain the same enthusiasm for reading the Bible and we look to the return of Christ as our predecessors did 150 years ago.
