Installation instructions for the Hymn Book Concordance Program

You may find it convenient to print this page so you can refer to it after you have downloaded the installation program.

  1. The installation program is called hbc.exe. To download it, click the Download the Hymn Book Concordance installation program link above. If you are presented with the options to Open the file or Save it to disk, select Save and click OK. Specify a temporary location such as C:\temp for the download file to be saved to. Once download is complete, you do not need to remain connected to the Internet if you have a dial-up connection.

  2. Locate and double-click the download file hbc.exe in Windows Explorer or My Computer at the location you specified (e.g. C:\temp).

  3. You should now see a dialog box with the title "WinZip Self-Extractor - hbc.exe". The "Unzip to folder" box should show a default location (usually "C:\windows\temp"), of the folder in which the installation files will be placed. You can change this folder location if you wish, but if you're unsure, just accept the default. Next, click the Unzip button. The message "10 file(s) unzipped successfully" should appear. Click OK to close this message, then click Close in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box.

  4. Now you can run the setup program itself. You can do this in one or other of the following ways (not both):
    1. Go to the folder "C:\windows\temp" in Windows Explorer or My Computer (or whatever folder location you chose in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box), locate the file Setup.exe (not Setup.ins or Setup.ini or Setup.pkg) and double-click it, or
    2. Click Start -> Run... and type C:\windows\temp\setup.exe into the text box, then click OK.
Either way, the Hymn Book Concordance setup program should now start.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the Hymn Book Concordance program:
    1. Click Next on the Welcome message window.
    2. Note the information shown in the Software Licence Agreement and click Yes.
    3. Note the Readme information and click Next.
    4. Unless you need to change where the program will be installed (for example, to another drive), click Next again in the Choose Destination Location window.
    5. Click Next in the Select Program Folder window.

All these dialog boxes are provided to allow you to control how the program is installed, but most people will just want to use the default settings. You can stop the installation process, or go back to a previous screen, at any stage.

    6. The Start Copying Files dialog shows the choices you have made before you actually start the installation. Click Next to confirm (or Back if you want to go back to an earlier screen to change the settings).
    7. After a few seconds, you should see the Setup Complete window. Simply click Finish and you're done.

Running the Concordance Program

You can now run the Hymn Book Concordance program by clicking Start -> Programs -> Hymn Book Concordance. Wait a few seconds for the program window to appear. To use the program, simply type in one or more search words and click Search or simply press the Enter key. The program will list any lines from hymns in the 2002 Hymn Book containing the search words. ( For the more technically minded: there is no support for explicit Boolean operators; multiple search words are implicitly ANDed, and matching is case insensitive).

Tips

You can use an asterisk at the beginning or end of a word (not in the middle of a word) as a "wild card" that will match any sequence of characters. For example, the search word merc* matches mercy, mercies and mercy's, while *pass matches pass, overpass and trespass. This is useful to ensure, for example, that the program will show:

The search words you type in do not have to be in any order. For example, Jesus love* matches the lines Jesus! Name of wondrous love and The love of Jesus, what it is.

The program recognises alternate spellings, such as Abr'ham for Abraham, 'mid for amid, confest for confessed, stedfast for steadfast, and so on.

Uninstalling the Program

Should you wish at any stage to uninstall the program (i.e. remove it from your computer), click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, then double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select the Hymn Book Concordance entry in the list of programs, and click the Add/Remove... button.

If you're short of disc space, you can delete the hbc.exe installation program file from its download location (C:\windows\temp), and the 10 other files created by the WinZip Self-extractor, without affecting the hymn book concordance program itself. However, you won't later be able to re-install the program if you uninstall it. It's not necessary to delete these files if you are unsure.

General

Let me know if you run into any problems or have any questions (mail: hbc@snichp.freeuk.com). I hope you find the program interesting and useful. Finally, if you wish to distribute the program to others, please restrict this to within the brotherhood.

Installation instructions for the updated data files

The updated data files are more accurate and more complete than the original files distributed with the earlier version (1.0) of the Hymn Book Concordance program. If you already have the Hymn Book Concordance program installed, you only need to download and install the updated data files.

If you don't already have the concordance program installed, you need to download and install the complete program, which has the new data files included with it.

If you do already have the concordance program installed, follow the steps below.

Click the Download only the updated data files link above.

Follow steps 1 - 3 above, the only difference being that the download file is datafiles.exe rather than hbc.exe. At step 3, the default location to which the data files will be unzipped (installed) is C:\Program Files\Hymn Book Concordance. This is the default location to which the Hymn Book Concordance program would have previously been installed. Unless you chose a different location when you originally installed the Hymn Book Concordance program, you shouldn't need to change this.

When you click Unzip, the new data files (alternates.txt, hbcinv.txt, contexts.txt and searchwords.txt) will be unzipped to the specified location, overwriting the previous versions of the data files.

Click Close to dismiss the self-extractor dialog. You can now delete the datafiles.exe file if you wish, as it is no longer needed.

With the new data files in place, you can run the concordance program as before.
